Mezzanine in a small children’s room – tips and ideas

It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

Trying to save space in the room, we introduce a lot of small amenities that unfortunately make not very much difference. However, the use of a mezzanine in a child’s room will be a very practical solution.

Mezzanine – height and materials

Mezzanine is an extremely functional building element, but it also has some requirements. First of all, you need to take into account the height of the walls – the higher, the greater comfort from its use. If “a few centimeters” are missing, it would be best to designate it as a place to sleep. Much more opportunities will give to build it in a high attic or loft

The best height of walls to install a mezzanine is from 4 to 5 meters, and the level under it must be at least 2.2 meters. If the upper one is to be a place for sleeping only, 120 cm is enough, and instead of a bed you can put there the mattress itself. Thus, the child will be able to use this facility also at an older age. In addition to the height, the thickness of the structure is important, the most commonly used one is about 20 cm. The best material for construction in this case is considered to be wood, but steel or reinforced concrete can be used just as well. For finishing, MDF, furniture board, plasterboard and wood are used. In small rooms the best will be glass, which optically enlarges the space

Mezzanine – how to develop

If the child’s room is really small and even narrow stairs leading to the mezzanine would become a problematic element, decide on a spiral staircase, a milliner or a ladder. Don’t forget the handrail and balustrade – when it comes to your child’s safety, caution is never too much. Another solution will be to buy a ready-made mezzanine bed. This is its simpler and cheaper counterpart, designed according to a similar scheme as a bunk bed. Then on the higher level there will be a bed for a child, and under it a closet, a desk or a sofa

The whole thing can be easily rearranged when rearranging the room. Both solutions will allow for separating three zones in the room: study, play and rest. As a result, in a child’s room there will be space for a bedroom, a playroom and a separate space for studying. An additional advantage will be that it will be easier to teach the child to keep things in order (toys in the play area, books in the study area)

In addition, the child will not be distracted while studying. In order to emphasize the differences between these zones, you can paint the walls in different, but matching colors. Bright ones will be the best – they will optically enlarge the room, while dark ones would overwhelm it. How we use the mezzanine levels depends only on us. We can create a space to relax and rest, read books, play, study or indulge in our hobbies

Take care of electric sockets as well – a younger child may need a small lamp when he or she is afraid of the dark, and an older one – one by which to read books. Do not forget that the mezzanine will be a practical solution especially when there are two children in the family; then it is a real space-saver, and for the kids an unusual place to play
