A recent study by Stanford University researchers showed that remote work is becoming more tiring than traditional work. There is also an emerging phenomenon of job burnout when it comes to overuse of communication platforms.

Coronavirus and professional burnout

According to research, as many as 6 out of 10 Poles work remotely. Although they see a lot of advantages in it, more and more often they see disadvantages of such a solution. Among them they indicate the lack of direct contact with employees, as well as the blurring of remote work and private life. A lot of employees long to return to the traditional office.

A team of researchers from Stanford University conducted a study where they found that home office burnout can be affected by:

  • lack of control over the other employee’s reaction,
  • not being able to watch facial expressions,
  • lack of constant professional contact.

The new phenomenon that is created by remote work is called zoom fatigue and causes, among other things, stress, disturbed sense of security and withdrawal in society.

– If the pandemic continues and we are forced to continue to function in virtual space, the impact will become increasingly negative. Experts are already warning that more and more people, regardless of age, need psychological or psychiatric support. People who work and function this way develop anxiety and depression, so we should expect an increase in such symptoms and a larger number of people who will suffer from them – emphasizes dr Dagmara Kawoń-Noga, an educator, lecturer and methodologist at the Higher School of Banking in Opole.
