Tiles are the most popular solution in kitchens. And for good reason! They’re extremely functional and can also add an aesthetic touch to your interior. Find out why they work best, which ones to choose and what the alternatives are.

Types of tiles

Let’s start with what kind of tiles you can choose for your kitchen. And there are actually quite a few types

  • Tile – these are the most traditional tiles for the wall. They are covered with a glaze, so they reflect light beautifully. Unfortunately, they are characterized by brittleness, but they are extremely resistant to chemicals, so you can easily wash them from any dirt, which is very easy to get in the kitchen.
  • Terracotta – these are stoneware tiles that will work well both as wall and floor tiles. They are made of purified, fine-grained clay and it is to clay that they owe their beautiful color.
  • Porcelain stoneware – these are ceramic tiles that have undergone an additional pressing process. They are perfect for both floors and walls. They are characterized by much hardness and strength.
  • Glass tiles – glass tiles will also work great in the kitchen, but remember that you can only put them on the wall. It is an extremely fashionable material that is easy to keep clean.

Matt or glossy tiles?

So what kind of tiles should you choose for your kitchen? The way tiles are finished is very important for the effect of arrangement. That is why it is so important to decide which way you want to go. High gloss enlivens the interior and optically enlarges it, which is why it works brilliantly in small kitchens in blocks of flats. Remember, however, that this feature also has its drawbacks – from a distance you can see any dirt on them, even delicate water stains. On the other hand, matte looks very modern and creates an interesting base for industrial arrangements, especially when paired with dark colors, and additionally you can’t see dirt on it.

Small or large tiles?

When choosing tiles for your kitchen, you should also think about their size and shape. Do you prefer classic square tiles, large uniform decoration, or maybe interesting patchwork tiles or hexagon tiles. Which solution you decide on should depend primarily on your interior, more specifically its size. Small kitchens should avoid large tiles. They can be square or rectangular – it depends on your taste. But it’s important that they reflect light, which will optically enlarge the kitchen. You can also opt for a tile mosaic. In large kitchens, on the other hand, large tiles will be perfect, thanks to which you will get a beautiful effect of an almost uniform, smooth wall. This is a brilliant solution for modern and industrial decor. However, if you want your kitchen to have a more elegant feel and a bit of glamour, you can opt for colorful mosaics

Alternatives to tiles

As you can see, tiles are a great solution for the kitchen. However, if not tiles, what else is there? When it comes to the walls, alternatives such as panels, waterproof wallpaper and even self-adhesive mosaics are certainly an interesting alternative. These are durable and easy to keep clean. However, when it comes to the floor, it is not recommended to give up on tiles, as it is the most durable and functional solution for the kitchen.
